For ultimate stability, use a tripod stand. But sometimes it is not practical - or permissible - to use a large stand. A single-legged stand provides good stability when working with long telephoto lenses and offers many more options in situations with dim lighting. Monopods are easy to carry, lightning fast to set up and ideal when space is tight.
You have probably seen sports photographers on the sidelines with large telephoto lenses - they do not have much space to work on and often need to be able to move quickly from place to place. Under these conditions, it is not possible to use a three-legged stand - but a one-legged stand works perfectly!
